Signed Rangers Top Auction for Greyhound Rescue Charity

Greyhound Rescue Scotland was formed in 2001 and since that date the charity has been run by unpaid volunteers. They are therefore reliant on public donations to allow them to continue helping wonderful animals who deserve a better life.

As part of their fundraising they are auctioning a Rangers top from 2002/03 signed by the Rangers team that season. There is a link to the Ebay auction here.

Please take a look at their website where you can find all the necessary details if you would be interested in donating or helping out by adopting a dog or fostering one. .

Committed Collector

When Evanston resident Lionel Carter purchased his first baseball card, Babe Ruth was still hitting home runs.

Seventy-four years and about 50,000 cards later, Carter, 89, has been forced to put his collection up for sale.

Burglars ransacked Carter's home last November. They took his wife's jewelry and emptied a drawer filled with a number of his baseball cards.

The stolen cards were recovered, but the jewelry was not. Carter feared the thieves would return. He said the police gave him two options to ensure his safety: Either put the cards in a safety deposit box or sell the collection.

"I sold every one of the cards because I didn't want anything to remind me of them," Carter said. "They meant so much to me (after) so many years of collecting.

Iran seeks bids for two new nuclear plants

Iran asked for bids to build two new nuclear power stations alongside a still unfinished facility in the south, despite increasing Western pressure over its atomic drive.

"Iran is launching two tenders for the construction of two nuclear power stations of between 1000 and 1600 megawatts capacity in Bushehr," the director of nuclear energy production, Ahmad Fayaz Bakhsh, said.

The southern city of Bushehr is where Iran's first nuclear power plant is being built by a Russian contractor. But its completion, due this year, has been repeatedly delayed.

Mr Fayaz Bakhsh said Iran's atomic energy agency would hand over the tender offer documents today for publication with a closing date for bids set at August 8.

"There are already contacts with Russian and European firms.

Rare-plant auction boosts UBC garden

Where would the University of B.C. Botanical Garden be without its hard-working Friends of the Garden group, better known as the FOGs?

Every year this group of volunteers raises more than $60,000 for the garden. They organize the hugely popular perennial plant sale on Mother's Day every year in May. They are responsible for the equally popular Apple Festival in October.

Both events bring in mega-bucks for the botanical garden.

Steinbrenners pull out of bidding group

The Steinbrenner family and the real estate development company Tishman-Speyer have dropped out of Excelsior Racing Associates, one of the groups that is bidding on the franchise held by the New York Racing Association, a spokesman for the Steinbrenners and the company said Monday.

The announcement came three days after Jennifer Steinbrenner, the daughter of New York Yankees managing partner George Steinbrenner, filed for divorce from her husband, Steve Swindal, a member of the Excelsior partnership and a general partner of the Yankees. After the announcement of the divorce filing, Excelsior said that Swindal would remain a member of the partnership.

"The Steinbrenner family and all of their related entities have withdrawn from the Excelsior bid," Howard Rubenstein, the Steinbrenner spokesman, said in a statement.
