| Lighthouse illuminates dream
Across the miles, the dream of a lighthouse in Rhode Island brought them closer together. Recently, their dream came true when Juli and Jon Chytka took possession of the Hog Island Shoal Light, off Portsmouth in Narragansett Bay. The Chytkas bought the century-old lighthouse for $165,000 in an online auction, making Hog Island the first lighthouse in New England to be auctioned by the federal government. Even more remarkable is how they did it. At the time of the auction last summer, Jon Chytka, 40, was in Baghdad, a lieutenant colonel and second-in-command of an Army Corps of Engineers battalion responsible for civil military operations, reconstruction and defusing explosive devices. His wife, Juli, 36, was in Giessen, Germany, where he is stationed when not in the Middle East.
Modest Mouse, Shins, Decemberists Swag in Art Auction
Buckman Elementary School, an arts magnet school in Portland's public system, is rife with the cool, artsy kids. And these cool, artsy kids-- along with some high-profile, indie rock favorites-- have donated some items to be auctioned in benefit of the school; they're no mere pinch-pot ashtray castoffs, either. In addition to a fly-fishing trip and jaunts to the Sonoma wine country, a series of hand-decorated mini-guitars and other swag from the likes of the Decemberists and Carson Ellis, Modest Mouse's Isaac Brock, the Shins, Stephen Malkmus and newest Jick Janet Weiss, Sam Coombs of Quasi, and the Dandy Warhols will go up for the good cause. The Art Rocks auction takes place in two parts: the first-- organized by Sleater-Kinney pillar and Buckman parent Corin Tucker-- goes down web-ways April 22, when online bidders can stake their claim on those hand-decorated mini-guitars via eBay (keyword: Buckman).
May meeting set on bus-route bids
Facing dozens of questions about its bidding process for 29 contract bus routes, the Greater Clark County School Board voted unanimously yesterday to discuss the matter at a meeting May 1. "It was a total surprise," board Chairman Robbie Valentine said of the calls that the system has received since last week about the Jeffersonville, Charlestown and New Washington routes. They are operated by contract drivers who own their buses rather than by district employees driving system-owned vehicles. .
Tenke Mining: Lundin Merger Offer Could Spike Bidding War.
Sufiy submits: It's all happening so fast. On April 4th, Lundin Mining (LMC) announced an all cash offer at CAD 5.0 per share of Rio Narcea (RNO) for all shares outstanding; it is now only a couple weeks later and we have news of a new deal to buy out Tenke Mining (TNKDF.PK), with their major asset of 24.75% in Tenke Fungurume copper/cobalt mine in Congo. As per the announcement, all shareholders of Tenke Mining are being offered 1.73 shares of Lundin Mining for each Tenke share, but I will be surprised if Lundin will get Tenke at the first price offer. Lundin's motivation is clear: such an asset is still under the radar of the investment crowd with almost no one following it. With construction of the mine at full speed, and expected first production in 2008, the price for Tenke will increase dramatically as soon as the story hits newsletters and analysts start to follow the stock.
Evanston man auctioning off massive baseball card collection
April 4, 2007 - Major League Baseball is underway again. Another seven months until the national pastime fades into the off-season. But, for one Evanston man, there is no such thing as an off-season. That's because Lionel Carter has been collecting baseball cards year-round since 1933. And now ABC7's Frank Mathie says all those cards are headed for the auction block. .
