The Guelph Humane Society is ringing in summer with it's 8th annual Secret Garden Silent/Live Auction and Tea at the Italian Canadian Club of Guelph on Sunday, April 29. It starts at 12:30 p.m. at the club, 135 Ferguson St., with bidding beginning on items in the silent auction. Bidding ends at 2:45 p.m. when guests will be invited to enjoy afternoon tea while the bids are tallied.The live auction begins at 3 p.m. The main item in the auction is a group tour of five exclusive Guelph gardens. The winner and friends will be driven to each location in a limousine, said a news release, and have refreshments at a beautiful pool house en route. Guests will learn all about pet friendly gardens when guest speaker Denis Flanagan of HGTV's One Garden Two Looks and The Indoor Gardener makes a presentation at 3:15 p.m.

Bidding war for Bell Canada?
BCE Inc. (NYSE: BCE) rose another nearly 4.5% today after The Globe and Mail reported a possible bidding war for BCE. The consortium of Canadian pension funds, led by Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co., might soon have two other groups considering the same deal.To remind you, first there were rumors BCE is in talks with buyout firms. Then came a denial, followed closely by an acknowledgment: BCE is indeed considering taking the company private. Here are the reported players: KKR is considering taking control of one-third of the company with partners Canada Pension Plan Investment Board and two other pension funds, thus fulfilling the required majority Canadian ownership. Ontario Teachers Pension Plan is apparently assembling its own consortium and preparing to formally enter the bid process early next week.
County commissioners study bids for asphalt, computer equipment
Tuscarawas County commissioners Monday opened and took under advisement bids for bituminous asphalt and for computer equipment to allow the county Child Support Enforcement Agency to switch its paper records to digital files. Asphalt bids, with per-gallon prices for the county to pick up the material followed by price for delivery, were as follows: JASA Asphalt Materials of Akron, catyonic rapid-set, $1.30, $1.27, high-float rapid-set, $1.30, $1.27, high-float rapid-set polymer, $1.55, $1.52, and Asphalt Materials Inc. of Marietta, catyonic rapid-set, $1.21, $1.22, high-float rapid-set, $1.18, $1.19, high-float rapid-set polymer, $1.52, $1.53. County Engineer Joe Bachman, who attended the bid opening, said the county uses about 400,000 gallons to 500,000 gallons of asphalt per year.
