Counties go high-tech for bids

As the final seconds of online bidding ticked away Thursday, offers came in to Camden County's purchasing division fast and furious.

County officials, however, disregarded the high bids.

It was the lowest ones they were after.

Up for bid were contracts to supply all of Camden and Gloucester counties' largest government buildings -- the county colleges, courthouses, wastewater treatment plants -- with electricity at a fixed rate for up to two years.

It was a lucrative offer considering Camden County spent $2.94 million on energy last year and Gloucester County paid $1.27 million.

"We're at the mercy of the market," said Ross Angilella, Camden County's administrator. "But by doing this, we are positioning ourselves to get the best possible rate."

Camden County, the lead purchasing agent in Thursday's reverse auction, got permission from the state last month to bid the contracts online, said Anna Marie Wright, Camden County's purchasing agent.

Chrysler bidding heats up this week

Another round of bids for the Chrysler Group are expected to be submitted this week, as DaimlerChrysler AG's leaders begin gathering in Stuttgart as early as today for high-level management and supervisory board meetings.

According to a source familiar with the process, "refined offers" likely to include firm financial details are due by mid-week -- just in time for DaimlerChrysler's governing supervisory board, including United Auto Workers President Ron Gettelfinger, to potentially discuss details at its Wednesday meeting.

Bidders are expected to include Cerberus Capital Management, whose team includes former Chrysler COO Wolfgang Bernhard and former Ford Motor Co. executives. Until last week, Cerberus was set to be a leading investor in bankrupt Delphi Corp.

Also in the game is the duo of Blackstone, Wall Street's top private equity firm, and Centerbridge Partners.

Rare farm machinery auctioned near Armidale

Hundreds of people from as far away as north Queensland and Melbourne have attended an auction of vintage and antique farm machinery south of Armidale on the weekend.

The auction, on Bill Morton's property at Dangarsleigh, included rare early 20th century farming equipment.

The rarest items were two Twin City tractors, which were made in the 1920s by an American company.

Although they were not in working order, they still fetched prices of up to $10,000.

One successful bidder, John Barwick, says it was money well spent.

"It's quite unique - I haven't seen anything like it - to have machinery in as good order as this," he said.

Auctioneer Victor Moore says many people were surprised by the value of the items.

"Extremely unusual and a lot of the items we're seeing here are very, very rare," he said.
