Idol Bids Farewell To Sanjaya

"American Idol" will no longer be graced by the presence of Sanjaya Malakar. The under-talented but unflappable singer who captivated millions of fans was finally voted off the show Wednesday night.

When the result was announced, Malakar wiped the tears from his eyes and got a bear hug from LaKisha Jones, the next lowest vote-getter.

"I'm fine," he told host Ryan Seacrest. "It was an amazing experience."

"I can promise you: We won't soon forget you," Seacrest replied.

Malakar then performed one last song, "Something To Talk About." Putting his own twist on the song, the 17-year-old known for his pretty looks and ever-changing hairstyles ad-libbed: "Let's give them something to talk about ... other than hair."

The fact that Sanjaya was voted off last night must have been music to Simon Cowell's ears.

The India School Fund Needs You

The vision of ISF is so brilliant that when the "India treckers" of 2007-08 visited the education center, they decided to contribute. Thanks to Francesco Cefalu and Ankit Singhvi's support, eight students gave a total of $650 immediately after their return on campus, and SABA gave an additional $5,000 for purchasing school materials and equipment such as desks, chairs and school uniforms. Thank you!!!
Although these donations help finance the opening of the school this year, they are not sufficient to cover the annual operation costs (estimated at

$25,000). Annie Bertrand, one of the co-founders and current President of ISF, asked for help from the RC sections to fund the remaining expenses through their charity auctions. Section F, H and I decided to join the coalition by selecting ISF as one of their lucky charities.

U2 auctions guitars for Katrina victims

The beloved Gibson Les Paul guitar owned by U2's The Edge fetched $US240,000 ($A287,300) and Bono's sunglasses pulled in $US20,000 ($A23,900) at an auction to benefit musicians who lost everything in Hurricane Katrina.

Yesterday's auction at New York's Hard Rock Cafe by Julien's Auctions raised $US2.44 million ($A2.92 million), including a 20 per cent buyer's fee, for Music Rising, a charity set up by The Edge and other musicians after the 2005 Gulf Coast hurricane.

It marked the first time such a wide selection of U2 memorabilia was available to collectors, organisers said.

Among the more than 200 items sold were Jimi Hendrix's 1966 Red Fender Mustang guitar, which fetched $US400,000 ($A478,800), former US President Bill Clinton's saxophone ($US54,000/$A64,600) and a pair of John Lennon's round, blue-tinted sunglasses ($US30,000/$A36,000).

Former police chief sentenced in theft of horse from auction

Canton resident Dennis L. Meeks found himself in a Holmes County courthouse last week, where he admitted stealing a horse from an auction last year.

As part of a plea agreement where the Holmes County prosecutor dropped felony charges of theft and theft by deception, Meeks earlier pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor theft charge.

In a sentencing hearing Tuesday, Holmes County Common Pleas Judge Thomas White suspended a 90-day jail term for Meeks, 61.

He must pay court costs and $800 in restitution to a Virginia man to whom Meeks later sold the stolen horse.

According to Holmes County Prosecutor Steve Knowling, last July Meeks went to a Mount Hope horse auction, where an Indiana man bought a horse for $800. Without the Indiana mans knowledge, Meeks convinced an auction employee that he was taking the horse on behalf of the winning bidder, Knowling said.
