Microsoft Cannot Afford To Lose Bidding For DoubleClick

DoubleClick is the largest broker of display advertising on the internet. The company was once public but is now owned by private equity interests. DoubleClick's main business is to serve the advertisements that appear on websites. Its brokerage of advertising is the glue between internet advertisers and online properties. Unlike Google (Nasdaq: GOOG), which sells text advertising, Doubleclick's business is to sell display advertising which is often paid for on a "per thousand impressions" basis and not "per click" as the Google text ads are. Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) is hoping to buy DoubleClick to move to the crossroads of the internet advertising business. It has lost much of its foothold there as use of its MSN portal has given way to Google's search site. Owning DoubleClick would make it the king of the internet display advertising business while Google would have the place at the top of the online text advertising food chain.

Ashurst faces Kirkland in tapas bidding war

Ashurst and Kirkland & Ellis are going head-to-head as their respective clients are locked in a bidding war for tapas restaurant chain La Tasca.

Ashurst client Tragus, which is owned by private equity house Blackstone, made a 96m recommended bid yesterday (28 March) for the AIM-listed restaurant, which is being advised by Dickson Minto.

But property tycoon Robert Tchenguiz's investment vehicle R20 has countered that with a rival 98m bid, working with Icelandic bank Kaupthing.

Kirkland partner Raymond McKeeve is advising Tchenguiz, a client McKeeve brought with him to the US firm when he left Linklaters last April along with private equity partner Graham White. Eversheds partner Stephen Nash is leading a team advising Kaupthing on the joint approach.

R20 and Kaupthing had made a previous bid for La Tasca at 190p a share prior to Tragus's approach.

TDP hits out at Jagan

HYDERABAD: The Telugu Desam has lashed out at Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy, son of Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, for criticising the party and challenging its leaders to take part in the auction for land originally allotted to Raghuram Cements in Kadapa district. At a press conference here on Sunday, TDP spokesperson N. Rajakumari asked Mr. Jaganmohan Reddy to ponder whether it was proper for him and his relatives to take advantage of his father's position. Referring to Mr. Reddy taunting TDP leaders to compete and place their bids for the land, she wondered if there was a precedent of a political party participating in auctions. `Maha dharna' At another press conference, party leader E. Peddi Reddy urged farmers and people from Telangana districts to take part in the TDP `maha dharna' to protest against Maharashtra continuing works on Babli on April 24.
