The event wasn't set up by an auction house or to benefit a charity. Instead, he was bidding against his two siblings in a private, Web-based auction that they held to divvy up their late father's personal property. Distributing a family's tangible belongings — often mundane knickknacks with far more sentimental value than monetary worth — has long had the potential to ignite family feuds. Divorce and second marriages can add to the tension, as children and stepfamilies vie for valued objects. Now, families and estate planners increasingly are turning to a number of novel strategies, including family auctions and a round-robin selection strategy, to divide tangible property without splitting families apart. Recent online tools also can help family members divide up a parent's belongings.
Government to invite financial bids for Maruti stake in May
Mumbai: The government will invite financial bids for sale of its residual 10.27 per cent stake in Maruti Udyog Ltd next month. "Financial bids for the 10.27 per cent stake in Maruti will be invited in May," official sources said. The government will sell around 2.96 crore shares in the country's top carmaker. Based on the current price of Rs776.30 , the government could raise around Rs2,300 crore by the stake sale. The government had invited expressions of interest (EOI) from potential bidders in February, but deferred a decision in view of the high volatily in stock markets. Finance minister P Chidambaram had said in March this year that the sale of residual government stake in Maruti Udyog was likely in 2007-08. More than 20 public sector banks, financial institutions and mutual funds had shown interest in acquiring the government's stake when the EOIs were sought, sources pointed out.
Cook Library to host author Caroline Preston and silent auction
Caroline Preston, author of the popular new novel "Gatsby's Girl," will be making a special appearance for Cook Memorial Public Library District patrons on April 19. "Gatsby's Girl" is based on the life of Lake Forest native Ginevra King, F. Scott Fitzgerald's first love and inspiration for "The Great Gatsby"'s Daisy Buchanan. Fitzgerald met the 16-year-old socialite at a dance in 1915 and wooed her with dozens of love letters. After a disastrous visit to Lake Forest, she threw him over, and Fitzgerald later cast her as a cold-hearted flirt in many of his stories and novels. "The romance between Ginevra and F. Scott Fitzgerald is based on actual events, but the rest of the story is my invention," said Preston. "Fitzgerald was a fanatical record keeper. His letters, scrapbooks and diaries were a wonderful source of information for my novel." The evening will begin at 6 p.m.
Mixed Forecast for Online Auctions
(Multichannel News) _ As eBay's Internet-based TV ad-auction venture hit massive turbulence, another from Google pulled onto the runway. The Cabletelevision Advertising Bureau last week abruptly pulled out of eBay's online marketplace for buying advertising slots on cable networks, dealing a critical blow to the project before it got off the ground. The CAB's about-face came just days after Google announced a deal with EchoStar Communications to sell a portion of the ad inventory on Dish Network's 125 national channels in an auction format. After several members of the consortium did a "deep dive" on eBay's Media Marketplace exchange for the past month, CAB CEO Sean Cunningham said, they concluded that the system would not provide the capabilities CAB needed.
