America bids Sanjaya farewell from American Idol

Sanjaya Malakar, the under-talented but unflappable singer who horrified and captivated millions in his improbable "American Idol" run, was finally voted off the show Wednesday night.

When the result was announced, Malakar wiped away tears and got a big hug from LaKisha Jones, the next lowest vote-getter.

"I'm fine," he told Ryan Seacrest. "It was an amazing experience."

"I can promise you: We won't soon forget you," Seacrest replied.

Malakar then performed one last song, "Something To Talk About." Putting his own twist on the song, the 17-year-old known for his pretty looks and ever-changing hairstyles ad-libbed: "Let's give them something to talk about … other than hair."

On Tuesday night's show, Simon Cowell had slammed his performance as "utterly horrendous." And for once, the notoriously mean judge was vindicated.

UA given green light for new Stirling mart

Stirling Council's development control panel has backed United Auctions' application to build a market at Hill of Drip, to the west of its existing facility at Kildean.

The 52-acre site will use the same roundabout off the motorway as the present site, but it will have better access.

One of the stumbling blocks to permission for the £10m development was the requirement to include a clause that the area would be returned to a greenfield site in 50 years.

Lunchtime markets: FTSE lower on bidding war concerns

Investors' fears over merger and acquisition activity weighed on the markets and the FTSE 100 was 4.7 lower in early trade at 6482.1. The FTSE 250, however, picked up 14.4 to 11915.

Barclays led the blue-chip index lower, down 1.2pc to 741p.

Investors were concerned that the bank would be drawn into a costly bidding war for ABN Amro following its agreed 3.225-for-1 all share bid, worth around \u20AC67bn (£46bn), for the Dutch bank.

GIG HARBOR: Benefit auction raises $20000 for disability training ...

A benefit auction for Community Inclusion Program last month raised an estimated $20,000 for the program. The event was organized by Peninsula High School senior James Washington, with help from other students in the school's Employment Training and Transition 2 program. The CIP program helps young people with developmental disabilities grow into independent adults.

James and other CIP youths volunteered and donated items for the fundraiser, which attracted more than 250 people. The teens raised $1,050 by auctioning off "companion for a day" outings in which the winner will be accompanied on a trip to a local attraction by two CIP youths.
