| Aust group bids to run New York horse racing
A consortium with its roots in Australia is bidding to run horse racing around New York. It has put in its proposal promising investment of up to $US1.8 billion. Capital Play is one of six companies seeking the franchise to operate Saratoga Racecourse, Belmont Park and Aqueduct racetracks in New York State. Four companies, including Capital Play bid originally for the rights, but the State decided to seek a fresh round of proposals. Capital Play chief executive Karl O'Farrell has outlined three proposals. "Capital Play remains fully committed to its original bid proposal which guarantees an investment of $1.8 billion," Farrell said. "Capital Play is very confident in its bid proposal; it is equally confident in its ability to bring the best marketing and racing model in the world to New York State, restoring the thoroughbred racing industry - including breeding and integrity - to the stature it deserves.
Top tourism awards invite online bids
APPLICATIONS for Scotland's top tourism awards are going online for the first time, making it easier and more environmentally friendly for businesses to enter. The Scottish Thistle Awards, which honour tourism firms, were launched this week at Scotland's biggest travel trade fair, VisitScotland's Expo in Edinburgh. VisitScotland chief executive Phillip Riddle said: "Online applications and judging will help us contribute to making Scotland a greener destination." There are ten categories this year and businesses can enter as many as are applicable to their individual achievements. The closing date for entries is June 7. The finalists will be announced in September, with the overall winners announced at an awards ceremony and dinner in October.
Duke Energy Carolinas Issues RFP for Renewable Energy
Duke Energy Carolinas has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) seeking bids for power generated from renewable energy sources, including sun, wind, water, organic matter and other sources. Broader use of renewable energy is part of Duke Energy's comprehensive plan to create a sustainable energy future for the Carolinas while the company continues to work to reduce its environmental footprint. .
Air to seek bids for onboard Internet access
Low-cost giant Southwest Airlines might add wireless Internet connections to its planes to attract more business fliers. Southwest will seek proposals within a few weeks to outfit several jets to serve as prototypes, Chief Executive Officer Gary Kelly said today. With such a system, passengers would have Internet access in flight, e-mail and "potentially delivery of entertainment services," Kelly said. "We are very seriously exploring that," Kelly said. "Wed be acutely interested in the cost of doing that. It would be a very
exciting development if we could make that work."
Southwest is studying the idea as part of a broader review of ways to generate revenue apart from ticket sales. The Dallas-
based airline offers only peanuts and other snacks and drinks on its flights so it can stay profitable at lower fares.
Football Manager MMO announced
A massively multiplayer version of Football Manager has been confirmed by Sports Interactive, and will be released on the PC and Mac, though not for a while, as the developer have confirmed the title will not be out in March 2008. While release is along way off, SI are plotting a beta test of the MMO footie manager game which will begin next month. Oh, and the game's called Football Manager Live. Creating a custom team, FM Live will see you locking managerial horns with up to 1000 other gamers on each server. "Imagine a cross between Football Manager, fantasy sports and auctions sites - and you are part of the way to understanding Football Manager Live," enthused SI boss Miles Jacobson. "It's great to be able to announce the game, and we can't wait to see the reaction to the beta when it launches next month." Players joining the game will either be assigned an automatically picked squad, or select your own with a 100K per week wage budget.
