Tazara barred from re-tendered bids

THE High Court's Land Division has restrained the Tanzania-Zambia Railways Authority (TAZARA), its agents or assignees, from opening the re-tendered bids scheduled for today concerning sale of a semi-developed estate of 6.4 acres valued at over 3bn/-.

Judge Stella Longway gave the order last Friday in favour of Ocean View Apartments Limited (applicant) in respect of the Tazara Estate property No. 3, pending determination of an application for temporary injunction set for hearing on June 11, this year.

A counsel from Law Associates (Advocates), Mr Rosan Mbwambo, for the applicant, filed the application the same day under certificate of urgency. A Tazara (respondent) had set to open the bids today for the estate located near SabaSaba Grounds at Kurasini area.

Agents defy auction law

REAL estate agents are selling properties at auction across Melbourne far above advertised prices — despite state laws designed to stamp out the practice.

A survey by The Age of 95 auctions last weekend found that more than 80 per cent went under the hammer at least 10 per cent — and in some cases more than 40 per cent — higher than the prices quoted by agents.

Leading agents have cited a strong, rising property market to explain why it is hard to pick prices accurately.

But the data compiled by The Age shows that the problem is endemic, with agents under-estimating final auction prices by an average of more than 20 per cent last weekend.

Among the most dramatic examples last weekend was a two-bedroom house in Niddrie that sold for $395,000 — 46 per cent more than its quoted price of $270,000-plus.

Buckeye Dog auction may return Possibility causes concern in Holmes

MILLERSBURG -- With rumors circulating the Buckeye Dog Auction may return to Holmes County, the commissioners on Monday met with Prosecutor Steve Knowling to discuss what, if anything, the county can do to keep the controversial operation out.

"A dog auction is not illegal, unless there is animal cruelty going on out there," Knowling said. "I'm not saying you couldn't stop it, but you would have to have a factual report from an investigation (of a complaint). You'd have to have some actual findings."

According to Commissioner Joe Miller, the Buckeye Dog Auction began in 2003. It first was held at the Perry Reese Community Center before moving to the Holmes County Amish Flea Market. Earlier this year, then-Buckeye Dog Auction owner Ervin Raber asked the commissioners if they wanted him to get rid of the auction.

Brazil's Currency Little Changed, Halting Four Days of Gains

April 23 (Bloomberg) -- Brazil's real was little changed, halting four days of gains, as speculation mounted that the central bank will boost purchases of dollars to stem the currency's rally.

Banco Central do Brasil said on April 13 it would make its actions in currency markets less predictable, announcing it would no longer disclose in advance its reverse currency swap auctions.

The nomination of former Banco Santander Central Hispano SA banker Mario Gomes Toros to the central bank's board may help the bank implement other measures, including increased purchases of dollars, to stem a rally that is hurting manufacturing exports and may slow economic growth, traders said. Central bank President Henrique Meirelles named Toros to replace Rodrigo Azevedo as monetary policy director.

Event auctions art for ARC

Tongue-tingling champagne, scrumdiddlyumptious entrees and more than 100 donated artworks make for a night to remember.

Friday from 5 to 10 p.m., more than 270 guests are expected to get their fill of food, art and social flair during the 2007 Artists for ARC event, presented by Arc-Winnebago County Disability Association, held at LaSures Banquet Hall.

The auction/dinner features a one-hour special event from 5 to 6 p.m. for ticket holders, where guests can enjoy a new champagne buffet and live jazz music with Mario Noche.

"Its kind of pre-event where people will actually have an opportunity to meet with and talk to the artists," said Meghann Kasper, board member and ARC volunteer.

At 6 p.m., doors open to the main event, where dinner is served and bidding begins on more than 100 art pieces from pottery and paintings to homemade purses, in the live and silent auctions.
