Designer auction for UNICEF

SIXTY Australian designers are drawing a thin blue line around the epidemic of children with AIDS/HIV. They have created one-off items for a charity auction.

International children’s charity UNICEF asked the designers to create a one-off piece for an online auction which will run between May 6-16. The designers’ only brief was that the piece incorporate a length of cyan-blue string – UNICEF’s signature colour and a symbol of unity. The results are amazing – gorgeous party frocks, jeans, jewellery, art, swimwear, pyjamas and much more. WA designers participating include ericaamerica, Aurelio Costarella and Joveeba. National designers include Sass & Bide, Zimmerman, Willow and Cartier. UNICEF’s Designers United initiative is part of its Unite for Children, Unite Against AIDS campaign which will raise funds to help children affected by HIV/AIDS.

Historic Century Farms not immune to struggle

For more than 100 years, Windy Bluff Farm was a tranquil 250-acre cattle, horse and hay farm in Greene County near the South River and the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

"It was my great-great-grandfather's farm," said Tommy Shelton, the farm's owner. "It goes way on back."

Yet when Shelton's father passed away in 2001, tracts of the farm were sold off. The bulk of the land became another family's goat farm, another cattle farm and South River Vineyards.

All that remains today of the historic Windy Bluff Farm is a 5-acre sliver of farmland.

"The way this real estate is getting more and more valuable, it's kind of foolish to hold on to it," Shelton said.

Windy Bluff is one of 59 farms in the Charlottesville region that has been in continuous operation by the same family for more than 100 years.

Masonic Temple to hold auction

SPRINGFIELD - One man's closet full of vintage Masonic heavy wool waistcoats might be another man's treasure.

That is the hope of the Springfield Masonic Temple as it prepares for an auction of furnishings and other items, scheduled for today at 11 a.m. at the historic Masonic Building, 339 State St.

A preview was held yesterday and another was scheduled for today from 9 to 11 a.m.

The auction is needed because the association - attempting to sell the building and move to a smaller site - is unable to keep all the current belongings, said President Robert E. Karowski.

"It's very sad it has come to this," he said. "It's a very beautiful building, has a lot of history. We are keeping what we feel we need for the new building."

The new site has not been finalized yet and a potential buyer of the current building has not yet been able to secure funding, Masonic officials said.
