| St. Francis Co. delinquent land auction sale nets $26719
The State Land Office collected close to $28,000 in revenue during the recent sale of tax-delinquent St. Francis County properties. According to a press release from the State Land Office, Commissioner of State Lands Mark Wilcox conducted the auction of tax-delinquent properties at the St. Francis County Courthouse. According to the press release, a total of 25 interested bidders attended the sale, which is held annually by the state to dispose of land on which the taxes have been past due for over four years. Ninety parcels were sold, collecting a total of $26,719.57 for St. Francis County and state government. The Land Commissioners office conducts one tax-delinquent land sale per county each year. A small percentage of certified parcels make it to public auction because a majority of the properties certified to our office are redeemed, which means that the back taxes are paid by the original owner, said Wilcox in the press release.

Maine fishing industry and its fish auction in jeopardy
PORTLAND, Me. (AP) - The forklifts zig and zag through the chilled warehouse, their forks balancing plastic crates filled with cod, haddock, pollock, flounder and other catch hauled from the North Atlantic. The smell of fresh fish hangs heavy in the air on a recent Sunday as more than a dozen buyers for seafood processors and wholesalers slide into their seats at the Portland Fish Exchange, a commercial fish auction that's been around for 21 years. Spread on the tables before them are sheets listing the types and amounts of fish to be sold. Telephones are pressed to their ears. They've already inspected the catch so auctioneer Paul Dewey begins the bidding. "I have 88 cents, looking for nine. I'm looking for nine," Dewey says in rapid-fire fashion as he auctions off a batch of pollock.
Why the Eastern Upper Peninsula likes Bart
WASHINGTON - Congressman Bart Stupak (D-Menominee) received the National Telecommunications Cooperative Association's (NTCA) Congressional Leadership Award for his work on telecommunications issues. Stupak said that he was pleased to receive the award and would continue to fight for rural residents' access to telecommunications. "Advanced telecommunications and broadband in rural areas can be the great equalizer, by ensuring rural communities enjoy the same important services as urban areas enjoy," Stupak said. "We are making progress in rolling out broadband services in rural communities, but we still have a lot of ground to cover."Last Congress, Stupak authored a bipartisan amendment aimed at protecting the Universal Service Fund (USF), a fund that pays for telephone service in rural areas.
The Peak conducting a silent auction to help Larchmont/Mamaroneck ...
WXPK 107.1-FM The Peak is conducting a silent auction this afternoon to raise money to help those who were devastated by Sunday's nor'easter in Mamaroneck. The money raised from today's auction will go to the Larchmont/Mamaroneck Hunger Task Force. The organization which - spends approximately $5,000 every two weeks on food under normal circumstances - lost all of its food in the flood caused by the storm. "We consider Mamaroneck a second home because of all the time we spend at Acme Recording Studios for our Peak Performances," said The Peak's program director Chris Herrmann in a statement. "The dichotomy of life styles has been made very clear through the recent storm which wiped out the community food bank that those whose homes were flooded relied on for support.
