'Wildlife sanctuary' up for auction

A PIECE of countryside described by local residents as a "wildlife sanctuary" has been put up for auction raising fears that it could be bulldozed by developers.

The field off Stag Lane, Chorleywood, is being advertised as "land with potential" on the Driver Norris auction site, despite the fact that there is no planning permission for the 1.5-acre Green Belt site.

Residents are so concerned by the implications of a sale that they are considering buying the land themselves and returning it to Three Rivers District Council to protect it. But with a minimum asking price of £90,000, it is unlikely they will be able to match competing bids when it goes to auction on Tuesday.

Prize makes Scout cookies better

BAY CITY -- A lucky Girl Scout cookie fan will get a little something extra in a special box of cookies purchased during the Girl Scouts of Mitten Bay second annual "Desserts First" chef competition.

Contest organizers will hide a ruby and diamond ring that Herman Hiss & Co. Jewelers of Bay City donated inside one of the cookie boxes.

The hunt for the jewels is part of the 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday dessert contest at Bay City's DoubleTree Hotel and Conference Center, 1 Wenona Park Place. Mid-Michigan chefs and culinary experts will compete for the People's Choice Award for the best dessert they can concoct with Girl Scout cookies.

The ring and other items donated for both silent and live auctions will help fund the Girl Scouts of Mitten Bay Financial Assistance Program, which sends girls to summer camp and other scouting events.

eBid Doubles Successful Closings, Adds Videos to Online Auctions

Online auction website eBid said it has doubled the number of auctions that are closing successfully compared to November 2006. eBid also added functionality for sellers to add videos to auctions when listing items. To add video to their auction listings, sellers upload video files to YouTube and add the unique 11 digit code that each new video is given into the box on the eBid listing page.

The online auction site said it has also made other, numerous improvements to the site. eBid is based in the UK. It launched in the US in 2005 and is available in Canada, Australia and Ireland.

Kuwait found first round of bids for a giant new 615000 bpd ...

DUBAI Spiralling costs in the energy sector could cut planned expansion of global refining capacity through 2011 by a fifth, mostly in the Middle East, an industry analyst said. Projects to increase global refining capacity through 2011 totalled 10 million barrels per day but only 8 million bpd would be built, said Fereidun Fesharaki of FACTS Global Energy. Two million barrels of planned refining capacity are not going to happen in the Middle East and Asia, but mostly in the Middle East, due to cost escalation, he said on the sidelines of an energy conference in Dubai. Increasing costs are hitting oil and gas projects throughout the world as the energy industry strains to bring online new capacity to meet rising demand. Kuwait deemed the first round of bids for a giant new 615,000 bpd refinery too costly in February and has yet to decide how it will proceed with the project.
